iPhone Earphone Alarm: Why Your Speaker Still Rings with AirPods Connected
Your music plays through AirPods, but your alarm fills the room. A private iPhone alarm takes more than connecting your earbuds.
Nenne editorial team ·
If you want to hear alarms only through AirPods on your iPhone, you must distinguish between the default clock app's alarm and the earphone-only alarm. The default alarm does not only sound on the earphones just because you connected the AirPods. The starting point is to set an alarm in an app that provides earphone output and check that the screen is locked.
This article guides you through the steps for setting Nenne's earphone alarm based on iPhone and AirPods. Even when using wired earphones, the basic flow is the same. Reducing the alarm sound and limiting the devices that emit the sound are different settings, so check them separately.
Why the default alarm still plays through your speaker with AirPods connected
If you set an alarm while listening to music through AirPods, it's easy to think that the alarm will only sound on the same device. However, we cannot assume that music playback and alarms in the Clock app process sound in the same way. Listening to music through earphones means confirming the output path of the current music, not confirming the output path of the reserved alarm.
Apple notes that even when headphones are connected to the iPhone, the default alarm will play through both the headphones and built-in speakers. This applies not only to AirPods but also to wired headphones. This is a difference you should be aware of before using the default clock alarm in the library or dormitory. Therefore, lowering the volume of the basic alarm can reduce the sound heard in the room, but it does not change the setting to output only the earphones. If your goal is to ‘stop the sound from going out,’ you need to check the alarm app’s earphone mode and actual playback results.
Setting an AirPods alarm in Nenne
For your first setup, test the sound somewhere suitable before entering a quiet reading room. Start with a short test to check the connection and volume before setting a longer nap. Also check whether an alarm in the default Clock app is still scheduled for the same time.
- Connect AirPods to your iPhone and check the connection status in settings.
- Open Nenne and check the earphone connection indicator on the home screen.
- Select ‘Earphones’ as the alarm method.
- Listen to the alarm sound you want to use in advance, and check the app's alarm volume and iPhone's media volume.
- Start by setting a timer for 10 seconds.
- Lock the screen with the iPhone's power button and wait for the actual alarm.
- Check whether the sound comes from the AirPods or from the phone speaker.
Nenne supports wired earphones and Bluetooth earphones. If your AirPods are connected to another device or are in a case and are not connected to your iPhone, you must first correct the connection. It's a good idea to check separately that you're wearing it on your ear and that it's connected to your phone.
The nap timer is used when you want to hear an alarm ‘a few minutes from now.’ If you need to wake up at a certain time, add a wake-up alarm in the Alarm tab and set the time, repeat day, earphone method, and alarm sound. Since time standards are different, you can reduce mistakes by first distinguishing whether you are trying to set a nap time or a specific time.
Why previewing the sound isn’t enough
Previewing alarm sounds can help you decide which sound to choose. However, the usage environment is different between the sound that is played immediately when the app is open and the alarm that sounds at the scheduled time after the screen is locked. Even if the preview is good, it does not mean that the lock status has been confirmed.
In the 10-second test, try to be in the same state as when you normally fall asleep. Wear your AirPods, select earphone mode, start the timer, and lock the screen. You must check whether the desired sound is produced in this state to ensure that it is close to actual use conditions. Detailed operation information can be found in Guide when turning off or locking the screen.
Also, judge the volume again based on the actual alarm. If the sound is still low even when you increase the Nenne alarm volume, check the media volume on your iPhone. We recommend that you do not confuse changing the ringtone and notification volume settings for your default watch app with checking the volume of the sound played by Nenne.
Locking the screen and force-quitting the app are different
Starting the timer and then locking the screen with the power button is different from swiping Nenne up on the app switch screen to exit it. Turning off the screen to take a quiet rest is a normal usage pattern. On the other hand, if you completely close Nenne on your iPhone, the earphone-specific alarm sound may not sound.
After setting the alarm, do not completely close Nenne, but only lock the screen. You should also distinguish between moving to another app and quitting an app. If you have a habit of uninstalling apps right before you go to sleep, thinking, ‘I need to clean them up because they’re in the background,’ this is especially important to check on days when you schedule an alarm. What changes when the app is completely closed
If you have updated the app, you will also need to open Nenne once before using the alarm. The current usage guide explains that the earphone wake-up alarm scheduled in the previous version may sound through the speakers the first time after the update until the app is opened. After updating, please check existing reservations and re-run test alerts.
What happens if AirPods disconnect while you sleep
The important question for earphone-only alarms is not only ‘where does it sound when connected?’ but also ‘what happens when the connection is lost?’ Nenne's earphone mode is designed to stop playback when disconnected without transmitting the alarm to the speaker. If you reconnect the earphones while the alarm is sounding, it will continue playing.
If the connection is lost while the nap timer is in progress, both the timer and the scheduled alarm will pause after approximately 1.5 seconds. When you reconnect, the process continues from the remaining time. Therefore, if the connection has been disconnected for a long time, the initially expected end time may vary. If your schedule requires you to wake up at a certain time, you should know and use this feature. When the earphones are removed during the timer
Even if you remove the AirPods from your ears, if they are still connected to your iPhone, an alarm may play on the earphones. Verifying that the app is connected to your phone is different from verifying that you are actually wearing it on your ear. The explanation that ‘it stops when the connection is lost’ should not be read to mean ‘it always stops when you take it out of your ears.’
Until the moment the operating system changes the sound output path, we cannot guarantee exactly the same results on all devices. When using earphones for the first time, test them in a place where sound is allowed even when disconnected. If you want to use a separate basic alarm for important schedules, you must choose a location for the alarm, taking into account that others may hear it.
What to check if you can’t hear the alarm
If you're having trouble, here's where to check before continuing to turn up the volume. In a situation where the connection is incorrect, there will be no sound from the desired device even if you just change the volume. It is easy to narrow down the cause by checking one thing at a time in the order below and performing the 10-second test again.
- Make sure the AirPods are actually connected to your iPhone.
- Check that the Nenne’s connection indicator and alarm type are ‘earphones’.
- Make sure your AirPods haven't moved their connection to a laptop or other device.
- Check if the app volume and phone media volume are too low or 0.
- Check whether the notification permission instructions remain and whether you have completely closed the app.
- Make sure you reopen Nenne after updating the app.
If the earphones are connected but Nenne does not recognize them, check Guide when the earphones are displayed as not connected. If there is no sound when the alarm time comes, check Guide when the alarm does not sound. Depending on whether the symptom is ‘the sound came from a speaker’ or ‘the sound didn’t ring anywhere’, the next confirmation step will vary.
A final check before using an iPhone earphone alarm
The key to the AirPods alarm is not just to trust that the earphones are connected, but to check the output method and lock status of the app to be used. Distinguish between the basic clock alarm and the earphone-only alarm, test briefly without exiting Nenne completely, and then set the desired nap time.
If this is your first time using this combination, it will be easier to set up later if you check the connection status, alarm method, actual volume, and operation when disconnected. You should also organize other alarms that you have already set to avoid a situation where a separate speaker alarm sounds at the same time. Earphone alarm is not a setting that changes all alarms on the entire phone at once, but is a function that is used in the manner determined by the selected app.
