Choosing an alarm app
Choosing an Earphone Alarm App? Check These 7 Things Before Installing
An app listing that says “earphone alarm” leaves several questions unanswered. Check these seven points before deciding what to install.
Nenne editorial team ·
When choosing an earphone alarm app, check the output method, operation when disconnected, and screen lock status first rather than the explanation that it ‘rings through earphones.’ If you want an alarm that only you can hear, these three things must match the purpose of use. Then compare device support, time settings, volume, advertising and cost to make your choice easy.
This article is a selection guide written by the team behind Nenne. This is not an article that directly tests and ranks various apps, but rather explains the standards to check when using an earphone alarm and organizes Nenne's public usage guide according to those standards. Check the same items even if you select a different app.
1. Does it also play through earphones, or only through earphones?
Although the two expressions are similar, their meanings may be different. The explanation ‘you can hear it through earphones’ can also include cases where the speakers sound together. On the other hand, if you want to listen only through earphones, you need to check whether the sound is coming out of the mobile phone speaker.
When reading the app introduction, look for an earphone output option and whether you can select speakers and earphones separately. It also determines whether connecting the earphones changes your entire phone alarm settings or applies only to the selected app's alarms. If there are any default alarms that you have already reserved, you can ring them separately.
Once installed, it briefly triggers an actual alarm. Don't just check if you can hear sound from your earphones, check if you can hear it from your phone as well. It is easy to explain the problem by dividing the sound between the sound leaking out due to the loud volume of the earphones and the sound being played by the phone speaker.
2. What happens when earphones disconnect?
You must also consider the possibility of your earphones falling out while you are sleeping, the possibility of your Bluetooth battery running out, and the possibility of changing the connection to your laptop. Check whether the app stops making sounds when disconnected, moves them to the speaker, or even stops the timer.
The actions required may be different for people whose priority is to hear an alarm even if the connection is lost, and people whose priority is not to hear speaker sound in a public space. No one method can be determined to be better in all situations. It is important to determine whether the movement is suitable for your purpose and location.
Nenne's earphone mode is designed to stop playback when disconnected, rather than relaying the alarm to the speaker. During the nap timer, it pauses after about 1.5 seconds and resumes from the remaining time when reconnected. Because of this characteristic, if the connection is lost, you may not hear alarms or the end time may be delayed. Disconnection operation guide
3. Screen lock and force-quitting behavior
Even apps that make sound well with the screen on will lock the screen during an actual nap. Previewing an app, locking the screen, moving to another app, or completely quitting the app should not be considered the same. Please check which state the usage guide is provided for.
When checking, do a short test as it is normally used. Here's how to start a timer, lock the screen, and wait for the alarm. Be careful not to take the results of just listening in advance to mean that you “checked it in the background.”
Nenne guides you to use alarms while locking the screen and using other apps. However, if you completely close the app by swiping up on your iPhone, the earphone-specific alarm sound may not sound. When choosing an alarm app, make sure these limitations are explained in a way that you can understand. Information regarding complete termination of the app
4. Does it support your phone and earphones?
Don't assume that both iPhone and Android are supported just based on the app name or search results. Check if you can install it from your phone's official app store and also check how to connect the earphones. It is easy to set up for the first time if there are instructions on how to use Bluetooth and wired earphones.
Nenne is available for iPhone and Android, and supports wired and Bluetooth earphones. You can use earphone mode with earphones that your phone recognizes as a Bluetooth audio device, such as AirPods and Galaxy Buds. When downloading the app, check the store link on official download page.
Compatibility statements are not a substitute for direct testing of combinations. The experience will also change as your phone model, operating system, earphones, and other connected devices change. On the day you buy new earphones or change your phone, don't just rely on your previous experience of using it well, check again briefly.
5. Countdown timer or scheduled alarm: which do you need?
People who want to take a nap may need ‘20 minutes later’, and people who want to wake up for class may need ‘2:00 PM’. If you try to solve both needs with the same function, you may have to calculate the time each time, or the end time may vary depending on the start time.
Check whether the app has a timer in minutes and seconds, allows you to specify a specific time, and sets repeating days. If the purpose is to tell you which station to get off while moving, you should also check that countdown timers and alarms based on location/operation information are different.
Nenne provides a nap timer that can be set from 10 seconds to 180 minutes and a wake-up alarm that sets the time and day of the week. However, the nap timer is not a feature that determines arrival at your destination. If you are looking for a destination-station alarm, read Difference between countdown timer and destination-station alarm and decide on the function you need first.
6. Sound previews and volume adjustment
A good alarm sound is one that you actually recognize and are comfortable using, rather than a sound that is popular with other people. Before choosing an alarm sound, listen to it in advance and check whether you can adjust the volume while wearing earphones. Start at a low volume to avoid hearing sudden loud noises.
Also check for instructions on how to check the volume within the app and the media volume on your phone. If you increase the app volume but your phone's media volume is 0, you may not hear any sound. The alarm you hear through earphones and the alarm you hear through the speaker may feel different even if the volume is the same.
Nenne allows you to hear and select the alarm sound in advance. Preview is the step of selecting a sound, and check whether the scheduled alarm sounds well in the locked state with a separate 10-second test. Especially in quiet places, you need to check both the volume level that is sufficient for your hearing and the amount of sound leaking out of the earphones.
7. What is free, and when do ads appear?
Distinguish between “free download” and “necessary features are available for free.” It is easy to predict the usage flow after installation by checking whether payment is required to use the desired earphone mode or repetitive alarm, whether there are separate conditions for some alarm sounds, and when advertisements appear.
As of October 3, 2026, Nenne's public usage instructions state that all features are free to use and that there are advertisements within the app. An interstitial advertisement may appear after turning off the alarm or canceling the timer, and alarm sounds with a lock can be opened after seeing a short advertisement. Policies may change in the future, so please check the current store and app instructions when installing. Nenne’s free usage guide
If you need to return to class or work immediately after turning off the earphone alarm, the flow after termination will also affect usability. In addition to checking whether payment is made, check at what stage you see the ad before the alarm starts, after it ends, or when selecting a sound.
A one-minute checklist after installation
After you've read the introductory text, it's time to check out the actual usage experience. Connect earphones in a place where sound is allowed and check the items below with a short timer. This list is not a test result that guarantees the performance of a specific app, but rather a process for users to check their own combinations.
- Can I choose the earphone output method?
- Is the actual alarm heard through the earphones but not the speakers?
- Does it ring at the scheduled time even when the screen is locked?
- Do you understand the behavior after disconnection and reconnection?
- Have you checked the required permissions and restrictions when exiting the app?
- Did you choose the function that suits your purpose between the nap timer and scheduled alarm?
- Have you checked the free features and when ads appear?
When looking at earphone alarm app recommendations, first look at whether the operation that suits your purpose is explained rather than the ranking number. You can judge whether Nenne is correct by the same criteria. If your goal is to take a short break in a quiet space, check the earphone mode and disconnection operation more carefully, and if your goal is to stick to a set schedule, check the scheduled alarm and actual usage conditions more carefully.
