In earphone mode, does sound really never leak to the speaker?
Earphone mode only rings the alarm when the sound is going to your earphones, and if they disconnect while ringing, it stops playback instead of switching to the speaker. That said, on some devices there’s a small chance of a very brief sound at the exact moment of disconnection, so test new earphones beforehand.
How is speaker leakage prevented?
Normally, when earphones are unplugged, a phone automatically switches sound to the speaker. That’s convenient for music, but for an alarm, it can suddenly ring through the speaker in a quiet place.
Right before ringing, Nenne checks which device the sound is actually going to. If it isn’t your earphones, it stays silent and waits for them to reconnect. If your earphones disconnect while the alarm is ringing, it stops playback the same way, and resumes through your earphones once you reconnect.
Since the phone’s operating system handles switching the audio path, we can’t guarantee that every device blocks even the briefest sound at the instant of disconnection. If you’re using new earphones in a quiet place, test them first with a 10-second timer.
Watch out for these cases
- Bluetooth speakers and car audio · Some phones report certain wireless speakers as the same type as earphones. In that case, sound can come from the speaker, so disconnect any Bluetooth speaker while using earphone mode.
- Taking Bluetooth earphones out of your ears without disconnecting them · If the connection to your phone stays active, the alarm can keep ringing through the earphones. It only stops once they’re put back in the case or disconnected.
- Volume set too high · If your earphone volume is very high, a little sound may leak out in a quiet place. Set a moderate alarm volume.
- Force-quitting the app on iPhone · Instead of leaking to the speaker, the alarm sound itself may not play at all. Don’t force-quit the app — just lock the screen.
- Right after updating the app · A wake-up alarm set to earphone mode in an earlier version may ring through the speaker the first time after an update, until you open the app. Open Nenne once after updating.
How to test it
- Connect the earphones you normally use and choose “Earphone” as the alarm mode.
- Start a 10-second timer and lock the screen with the power button.
- Check that the alarm is heard only through your earphones. Also try taking them out while it rings to confirm the sound stops.
