The name behind Nenne

Where did the name Nenne come from?

Why name a headphone alarm app Nenne? The answer goes back to something an officer said while I was serving in the Korean military.

During my military service, an officer who looked after us once told me, “Go Nenne.” What he said in Korean was “넨네해,” a playful way of saying “go get some sleep.” I expected an ordinary “sleep well” or “get some rest,” so it caught me off guard and made me smile.

He was in his fifties, as I remember it. In the military, even friendly words can sound clipped and formal. Coming from him, that almost childlike phrase felt unexpectedly warm. For a moment, the place felt a little less rigid, and I never forgot it.

Nenne traces back to the Japanese word ねんね, baby talk for sleep. In Korean, it also sounds like something you might say to a child at bedtime. Maybe it is just me, but I hear a softness in those two syllables that makes it easier to relax.

“Go Nenne.”
Two small words I never forgot.

How that phrase became an app name

When I needed a name for my headphone alarm app, that memory came back. Nenne lets you take a short nap and wake at the time you choose. In headphone mode, the alarm plays only in your headphones, so you can rest without disturbing anyone nearby.

An alarm is meant to wake you up. I also wanted the name you see before falling asleep to feel reassuring, almost like someone saying, “It is okay to rest for a bit.” That was how “Nenne” felt to me on a rigid day in the military.

So I called the app Nenne. I hope a little of the ease I felt then finds its way into someone else’s break too.

Nenne

Go Nenne. Take a little break.

Connect your headphones and close your eyes comfortably. Nenne will let you know when it is time to wake up.
