A quiet workday

I Took a Short Nap During Our Office Move

A moving day needed short breaks, but I should have checked the shared-space rules first.

On moving day, monitors and document boxes filled the hallway from early morning.

We sorted cables, labeled equipment, and checked that nothing stayed behind.

After lunch, my back was stiff and my eyes burned. There was still plenty to move.

The facilities team planned to reset the moving route at two, leaving about thirty minutes.

I chose a corner chair in an empty old meeting room for a ten-minute rest.

I had put my headphone case deep in my bag because of the dust.

I left vibration and sound enabled and assumed somebody would wake me if necessary.

Once I closed my eyes, tape tearing and cart wheels faded away.

When the alarm rang, the room door was half open and the melody reached the hallway.

A coworker pushing boxes stopped and told me the time. I apologized before anything else.

During a move, some routes must stay quiet and some areas must remain clear for safety.

For the next break, I checked my headphone connection and remaining battery.

When headphones were not practical, I told the coordinator I was stepping away and drank water.

A short rest was possible on moving day, but the alarm and the route had to work for everyone.

For the next moving break, I checked the carrying route with the coordinator and rested only where I would not block a cart or a safety path.

For the next move, I marked my box handoff time on the plan, told the floor lead before stepping away, and returned early enough to clear the route before the next cart arrived.

This story is a reconstruction based on an everyday situation that could realistically happen.
